10/20 (Sat.) 18:30 Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe│Taiwan│Shaking the world with Paiwan music

The Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe was formed at the Taiwu Elementary School in Taiwan. In 2002, Camake Valaule began teaching at the school and led his students in taking part in traditional singing competitions, in part to work toward passing down the legacy of Paiwan tribal singing. Valaule began documenting ancient Paiwan songs through oral accounts and speeches from tribal elders.

The troupe has performed at venues in the US, Germany, France, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia, Switzerland, China, and Japan. They have also been involved in collaborations with pipa master Wu Man and Grammy Award-winning ukulele guru Daniel Ho. The troupe’s work has been described as “heavenly music that allows one to see the mountains and hear the breeze.”
