Frank holds a masters degree in business administration and has gained practical experience in the music business for nearly 30 years as a copyright and label manager for renowned world music label Piranha Records as well as an independent world music publicist. Besides his position as co-CEO of Piranha Arts which produces WOMEX the international networking platform for the global world music community, Frank is part of the Piranha Records team as well as of the educational and consulting branch Piranah Consult active for clients such as Goethe Institute (i.e. in Juba, South Sudan and Beirut, Lebanon) or the Copyright Association of Barbados with collaborative projects like “Calypso in Berlin”.
As a tutor and education project manager Frank has developed and implemented various educational projects for public schools and youth centers co-funded by the European Union and targeted to training young student and pupils about the cultural and economical background of world music productions and possible career opportunities in this sector of the creative industry.
Together with his colleague Christine Samba Frank is frequently organizing capacity building programs for emerging and experienced world music artists and producers. As CEO of Piranha Arts Frank is also involved into the production of one of the worlds biggest carnival street parades The Carnival of Cultures in Berlin with over 5000 participants of multicultural background and over 1 million visitors. From the start Frank has acted as a mentor, panelist and speaker for many industry events like WorldMusic Expo WOMEX, Primera Linea in Havanna, Cuba or SOTX in Chengdu,China.
As an independent publicist Frank has led various marketing campaigns for world music acts and projects of numerous backgrounds including renowned artist like Gilberto Gil, The Klezmatics, Tinariwen, Taj Mahal, Juanes, Robert Wyatt, Staff Benda Bilili, and more. For several times Frank Klaffs was appointed as member of the jury panel for Germany’s national world-music contest “Creole! which involves a competition between more than 2500 musicians with a strong trans cultural diversity.
As project manager Frank was also part of cooperative research projects in the field of metadata analysis for the content of global music archives with partners like Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology or as provider for independent industry studies on the sector of global live music.
